Web Site Design, why some things are soo wrong!!
Nov 14th
Ok, I just had a conversation with some of my more artistically minded friends on website design and I started on how soo many people have no idea and the reason why is those people are guided by money hungry business failures that think they know all but realistically haven’t made a single site themselves or even asked the public what they want.
My biggest rant was on the big bright boxes with text in them on all those pyramid “buy this crap now” schemes where you pay heaps of money for some book on “self help” which in turn makes the writer more money than it does you getting help and discover yourself. Those boxes are usually in red or yellow, they hurt the eyes and scare any normal person off. Who really wants to be bugged every paragraph in a slightly illegible, bright box to buy a product. If they want to buy the product they’ll buy it without being harassed by colour. Also, I am certain the user would rather know about the product by reading descriptions than 3 million BUY ME adverts and 3 more million testimonials telling you everything but what the product is. If you walked into a shop and every 45 seconds a sales assistant asked you if you wanted to buy a product you’d soon get tired of it and feel like doing something slightly violent or saying something rude to them (just admit it, you would feel like it). It doesn’t work in sales in person so it doesn’t work online either.
Ugh, i’m all riled up now XD
It’s like when I start on why sites with why black background are actually quite good when designed properly, why standard buttons from Dreamweaver suck to us designers but remember that your end user isn’t normally a designer (unless it actually is XD) and why too much white space can be a great thing.
